The paper was folded, so I thought at first it might be
a note to a friend. Maybe it would provide a clue to our
predicament. The folded paper turned out to be part of
an essay Tom had written for health class. It didn't help
us in terms of providing an answer for why Tom was feeling
and acting in the strange new ways. However, Tom's writing
on the paper did provide me with one of the most graphic
pictures of depression that I have ever encountered. I'm
